Some say he’s a myth. Others claim to have spotted him between ferry rides. Scientists refuse to acknowledge his existence. But we know the truth: Bernie the Whale is real, and he’s making waves across the Great Lakes.
Bernie was first “officially” spotted in Lake Superior in 2012, when a local fisherman mistook him for a capsized submarine. Since then, sightings have been reported across all five Great Lakes, leading experts (us) to believe that he is either a highly migratory species or just really bad at directions.
We first met Bernie at the tip of Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City, Michigan when he got stuck in shallow water. It was then that we were able to attach the tracking device and follow his adventures.
Why are we tracking Bernie? Because the world deserves to know what he’s up to. Is he frolicking near the Sleeping Bear Dunes? Has he found a new favorite shipwreck to nap beside? Did he crash a yacht party in Chicago? Through state-of-the-art whale tracking (which mostly involves blurry photos, eyewitness accounts, and the occasional hand-drawn map), we will keep you updated on Bernie’s latest adventures.
Follow along as we unravel the mystery of the Great Lakes’ most legendary resident. And if you happen to see Bernie yourself, let us know! Just remember, photographic evidence is strongly encouraged, but if your camera mysteriously malfunctions in his presence… well, that’s just part of the magic.
Armed with cutting-edge tracking technology (okay, a small, state-of-the-art GPS tag), we will bring you up-to-date reports on whale activity across Lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, and Ontario. Whether you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of Bernie near Mackinac Island or witness him making waves in Buffalo, we’ve got you covered.
Stay tuned for more updates, and don’t forget to check the tracker for Bernie’s latest location. Who knows? He might just pop up near your favorite beach next!
